It really does make me wonder where is it all going to end up? I refer to Artificial Sweeteners after recently discussing its cousin, processed or added sugar. Artificial Sweeteners have been linked to problems such as cancer, migraines, depression, birth defects, seizures, behavior changes, anemia, sexual dysfunction, thyroid dysfunction, and more. Not that I'm here to defend Artificial Sweeteners but there would be other factors here as well when linking products to health problems.
Splenda, NutraSweet, Sweet'N'Low and Equal have all taken supermarket aisles and even café sugar bowls by storm. The low calorie options are very difficult for the human body to metabolize and what can't be metabolized can't be absorbed, used by the body for energy, or stored as fat. Since they are intended to pass right through your digestive tract without any impact, the calories of these artificial sugars don't "count" in terms of your diet - making them low-cal or zero-cal.
Artificial sweeteners are a non-nutritive substance meaning your body can only partially metabolize if at all. The theory is that such substances pass harmlessly through your system with no effect, either good or bad. Hence, if you can find a substance that tastes like sugar but does not metabolize or release its calories then you can literally have your cake and eat it too without fear of weight gain or other undesirable bodily reactions such as high blood pressure or high blood sugar.
The problem is that most sugar substitutes are unnatural due to being synthesized in laboratories. The problem is our bodies are designed to deal with the molecules nature made, but our bodies were not made to handle the strange synthetic molecules of engineered drugs and non-nutritive sweeteners. The risk may not be obvious at first and can take time for the damage to become apparent. No matter what research is proven or dis proven the answers will never truly be realized without doubt. This is why you would be well advised to trust your own inner intelligence and team up with nature as best you can.
My advice for what it's worth, don't interfere with nature as it can't be beaten.
